In November 2017, I received a mystery Olay face moisturizer. So I decided to update the post about my Olay Regenerist Whip Moisturizer review. I noticed that this post has gained some traction. But this is to be expected when you live in dry, interior Alaska. Is Olay Regenerist Whip good for oily skin?Īnd in a few short weeks, we will be thankful for any day we get above 50 degrees.

Typically a pair of towers at the entrance to a temple, and first appearing in fully developed form just before 2000 BCE, the pylon (ancient Egyptian bekhenet) symbolized the mountains of the horizon (ancient Egyptian akhet, hieroglyphic) and became the physical model for them. The study of the reception of ancient Egypt in these different cultures and places is a field of scholarship in its own right, but our portal to this world will be a literal gateway: a pylon. The legacy of ancient Egypt now extends throughout every inhabited continent and can be traced from antiquity to the modern day, spreading from Africa through the Mediterranean world, the Middle East, Europe, and eventually the Americas. Over the last two millennia, in European traditions as well as in those of the Islamic world, the awesome physical presence of ancient Egyptian monuments was an expression of the equally potent wisdom they seemingly both preserved and at the same time guarded and concealed. The engagement-and occasional obsession-with ancient Egypt and the adaptation of its concepts and imagery are not confined to the forms and contents of the pyramids, temples, and tombs that have so awed tourists since classical times, but exist within the history of ideas. The monumental achievements of pharaonic culture inspired not only the later ancient Egyptians themselves, but have resonated throughout subsequent civilizations. A long prehistory with interactions among groups from far-flung territories to the west and south, and later with the northeast, forged the rich cultural traditions of pharaonic Egypt. The land of ancient Egypt-the Nile River valley and delta with the surrounding deserts-was the birthplace of a civilization that flourished for over three millennia. Denison Olmstead, Professor of Astronomy and Natural Philosophy at Yale University, July 18, 1845, at the laying of the cornerstone of the New Haven City Burial Ground (Grove Street Cemetery) gateway “Dignified and beautifully proportioned, it is symbolic of an attitude toward the dead and their part in the hereafter, expressive, but respectful and reverential, which arose in the valley of the Nile centuries before Christianity and is consequently so detached from modern creeds, prejudices or sentiments that it can appeal to any belief.” No cash balance or cash flow is included in the calculation. Note the ‘descending limb’ of the Starling curve for patients with severe heart failure: the implication is that a reduction in preload might (paradoxically) increase ventricular work (click to enlarge) Figure 10. With increasing severity of heart failure (brown lines), a greater preload is needed for a given level of activity. The horizontal lines show the ventricular work required at rest, then for mild and finally severe exertion. In the normal heart (blue), ventricular work increases as a function of preload. At this point, fluid accumulates in the interstitium of the lung and then the alveoli. In the acutely failing left ventricle, the relation is shifted downward and to the left so that to maintain any given cardiac output, a higher filling pressure is required.Īs the filling pressure is the same as the pulmonary venous pressure, the rise results in an increase in the rate of transudation from pulmonary capillaries into the lung tissues, and the rate eventually exceeds the rate at which fluid can be removed by the lymphatics. This is the Frank-Starling relation ( figures 9 and 10): as filling pressure rises, so does cardiac output. Left ventricular work (and cardiac output) is determined by left ventricular filling pressure (that is, end-diastolic pressure). There is a net (small) constant transudation of fluid from the pulmonary capillaries which is removed by the lymphatics. Fluid is held in the pulmonary capillaries by the balance between the hydrostatic pressure in the capillary tending to push fluid out and the colloid osmotic pressure (largely generated by plasma proteins) tending to hold fluid in the vascular space. Pathophysiology: Pulmonary oedema is best understood in haemodynamic terms. There is usually a gallop rhythm and widespread crackles and wheezes through the lung fields. On examination there is massive sympathetic nervous system activation, and the patient is thus usually pale and clammy, with a tachycardia and often hypertension. There is usually an acute precipitant that has triggered the episode of illness ( table 4). The breathlessness is often accompanied by wheeze and cough productive of pink frothy sputum. The experience for the patient is terrifying: she has to sit upright, is barely able to speak and often fears that she will die. Patients present with severe breathlessness which is usually of abrupt onset. Pulmonary oedema: Pulmonary oedema is an acute medical emergency. Common precipitants of acute pulmonary oedema Broadly, patients divide into those with acute pulmonary oedema, where there is fluid in the airspaces in the lung, and those with peripheral oedema, where the problem is fluid retention. Acute heart failure is a problem of fluid distribution. The majority, perhaps as many as two thirds, of patients with heart failure are initially diagnosed during a hospitalisation. Here, we will take acute heart failure to describe patients with sufficiently severe symptoms and signs that they present acutely seeking medical attention (and are often admitted to hospital) whereas chronic heart failure describes the syndrome patients have once acute heart failure has been medically treated. However, even then, the terms can be confusing. The most useful distinction to make is between acute and chronic heart failure. It makes sense, perhaps, to consider the separate heart failure syndromes as the pathophysiology of them is distinct: the differences highlight important differences in therapeutic approach. Over many years, the heart failure syndrome has attracted a number of different terminologies of varying degrees of usefulness. This is where the slugs will lurk, so if there’s nowhere for them to hide, there’ll be fewer of them about. One of the best ways to reduce slug attacks (aside from setting up slug traps) is to make doubly sure the area around your carrots is clear of weeds. Although seedlings are most at risk, slugs that live in soil can also carve out holes in the roots as they get larger. They can mow seedlings to the ground as soon as they emerge, meaning you have to start all over again. Predictably, it’s those slippery slugs that are the first pest to watch out for, particularly earlier on in the growing season and in wet weather. Slugs attack the young foliage and will sometimes burrow into the roots Sock it to the Slugs! Carrots may not particularly care about soil type or having lots of water, but they do hate having to struggle against weeds, so pull them up every time you spot them. It’s very important to keep weeds in check. The roots will push themselves away from each other at this point, giving good-sized roots to harvest later on. Continue thinning in stages until the plants are about half an inch (1cm) apart. The first tender young roots that you pull as thinnings are great eaten whole in salads or lightly steamed as a rather cheffy addition to the dinner table. Thin your carrots in stages to give them space to grow. It’s a case of treating them a bit mean to keep them keen! Carrots do need moisture to grow, but you’re only likely to need to water them in warmer climates or during a long dry spell. Interestingly, holding back with the watering can pay dividends when it comes to flavor. Only water carrots when absolutely necessary Carrot Care Keep making small sowings every few weeks, finishing with a final sowing at the start of summer to give fatter, chunkier roots to store over winter. Doing this will help keep the soil surface dry, which will make it less attractive to slugs – more on those shortly.Įarly spring sowings will give a harvest from early summer. Water along the row a few times to really soak it, then sow. If the weather is dry you can water into the drill you’ve marked out before sowing. Then just cover the seeds over with soil. If you don’t have the steadiest hand, a simple tip is to mix the seeds with fine sand to sprinkle thinly along the drill, which will help spread the seeds out. The seeds are pretty tiny, and it’s very easy to sow them too thickly. Mark out drills about half an inch (1cm) deep and around 10in (25cm) apart, then sow very thinly. It just gives them a bit more character in my opinion! And where else would you get all those comedy-shaped veggies from? Sow carrot seeds thinly directly where they will growĬarrots prefer a sunny spot, though an area in dappled shade would work too, especially in warmer climates. Having said that, I don’t think it’s that big a deal to have forked roots. The soil itself should be free-draining and not too rich, which can also encourage forked roots. It’s easier that way, and helps avoid bent or forked roots, which you may get if you try to transplant seedlings from elsewhere. You can help things along by putting in place a temporary cover of garden fleece or plastic (or use a cold frame) a few weeks in advance to help dry and warm it for the sowings ahead. For the year’s earliest carrot sowings, the soil needs to have dried out and warmed up a little after the winter. It really helps to have someone who is at least not afraid of filling out paperwork. They were very helpful in making sure we at least wouldn’t be disqualified for some minor technicality. That said, we were offered help by the staff at the VAPG division and I qualified for a pool of money specifically set aside for farmers of color applicants. It was challenging as neither I nor my two friends, one a lawyer and all of us college graduates, had any grant writing experience. What was your experience like filling out that grant? What did you produce? Previously, you applied for the Value Added Producer Grant (VAPG) through the USDA. Once we start the farmers’ market we will bring on one or more harvest hands and market helpers. I would love to attend a workshop/training on how to form a worker owned cooperative. Our current labor force is Mica and me, each working full-time. In many ways, a work trade of some kind would be beneficial. In my view, Feral Heart farm’s ideal labor situation is a worker-owned cooperative, which might be difficult to achieve since any farm’s labor needs fluctuate greatly throughout the year. Could you speak more to how Feral Heart is addressing this? Labor is always at the forefront of conversations about farming in California. some of our food production, outside the capitalist system, more like peasants. The hope was that we could exist in some small way, i.e. We would share the harvest with our community and try to get as many of them involved as possible. I was excited to start a radical farming project with friends and grow in a hot summer climate like that of Sunol, as Half Moon Bay is characterized by a cool coastal climate.įeral Heart Farm started out as an attempt to have land access for our radical anarchist community in the East Bay. What was your motivation behind starting Feral Heart Farm? How would you explain the ideology behind Feral Heart? We also maintained a small goat milk herd share. Over the 11 years I lived and worked there we took veggies to the Half Moon Bay Farmers Market as well as a few restaurants in town. I also helped maintain about an acre of apple, pear, plum and peach trees. I built and cared for annual and perennial vegetable gardens. We raised laying hens, ducks, milking goats, sheep and llamas. I started at Tunitas Creek Ranch in Half Moon Bay in 2004 as an intern. I went to the EcoFarm conference with them with the intention of finding a farming internship. While volunteering for Food Not Bombs in Santa Cruz I started guerilla gardening with friends. Around this time I decided to become vegetarian, which ultimately proved very formative in my decision to farm many years later since vegetarianism led me to question where my food comes from and how it gets to our plates. I was exposed to even more variety of fruits and veggies this way. While I was in high school I got a job in the produce section of a small, locally owned grocery store. This was important because my mom has a legacy of preparing those vegetables and my dad has been influenced to grow and eat many of them (he’s Euro American). Her dad grew principally Filipino fruits and vegetables and raised pigs and chickens. My mom, who is Filipina and Chinese, grew up on a small farm in Hawai’i. My dad has had gardens and orchards most of my life so fresh fruits and veggies played an important role in my development, although I didn’t recognize it until I was in college. What inspired you to start farming/develop a personal relationship with the land? The mission of this work is to broaden the narrative of what it means to be a farmer participating in the state’s agricultural system by sharing the wide spectrum of relationships that growers have with land. This post is part of an ongoing project by PAN Farmer Justice Fellows who are working to uplift the many different voices of farmers in California. Tending to this farm are Aaron Dinwoodie (he/him) & Mica (they/them), two farmers “committed to nurturing relationships with land, food, & people.” PAN Farmer Justice Fellow Moretta Browne had an opportunity to work alongside Aaron and talk with him about Feral Heart Farm, his relationship to the land, & alternative models of farming in California. Feral Heart Farm is a diverse 3.2 acre farm in the Sunol Ag Park in Sunol, CA. BuzzFeed News received an advance copy of the Bot Sentinel report and the list of users identified within it and found hundreds of additional tweets that violate Twitter’s rules. In the report, Bot Sentinel includes examples of tweets from this group of 83 users that violate Twitter’s terms of service against targeted harassment. “Are these people who hate her? Is it racism? Are they trying to hurt credibility? Your guess is as good as ours.” “There’s no motive,” he said, comparing the anti-Meghan campaign to other disinformation and harassment campaigns on Twitter such as the #StopTheSteal movement to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election or the campaign to remove actor Amber Heard from the upcoming Aquaman sequel as a result of abuse allegations made against her by ex-husband Johnny Depp. Past analyses by Bot Sentinel include the right-wing campaign to discredit the results of the 2020 American election, accounts behind COVID-19 disinformation, and online abuse toward UK football players after the team lost in the Euro 2020 final.īot Sentinel CEO Christopher Bouzy told BuzzFeed News that this anti-Meghan Twitter campaign is unlike anything he and his team have ever seen before. It evaluates an account and assigns it a score based on the likelihood that the account is either run by a bot or by someone engaging in targeted harassment, trolling, or other behavior banned by Twitter’s rules. Meghan told Fortune in October 2020 that she hadn’t been on social media in a long time “for own self-preservation.” In a January interview, Harry said that he and Meghan “will revisit social media when it feels right for us - perhaps when we see more meaningful commitments to change or reform.”īot Sentinel is a crowdfunded website and browser plug-in created in 2018 to analyze the activity of Twitter accounts and identify those that violate the platform's terms of service. The couple currently does not have a social media presence on any platform (neither does Archewell, their charitable foundation and production company). Bot Sentinel’s analysis also revealed a level of sophistication and coordination between the accounts, who use their combined 187,631 followers to fuel a campaign of negativity against Harry and Meghan.Ī Twitter spokesperson told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that they are “actively investigating the information and accounts referenced in this report - we will take action on accounts that violate the Twitter Rules.” On Tuesday, Twitter analytics service Bot Sentinel released a report examining Twitter activity related to the Sussexes and found that the majority of the hate and misinformation about the couple originated from a small group of accounts whose primary, if not sole, purpose appears to be to tweet negatively about them. And now, an analysis of more than 114,000 tweets about the couple has revealed a coordinated campaign of targeted harassment of Meghan on Twitter - and the 83 accounts responsible for approximately 70% of the negative and often hateful content. Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have long cited social media toxicity as a factor in their decision to step back from royal life.
